John Barrick is a career prosecutor, husband, father, and longtime Oxnard resident who has spent his life standing up for victims, fighting for accountability, and taking on difficult cases when the stakes are highest.
John’s connection to Oxnard goes back to childhood. Born in Staten Island, New York, John moved with his family to California as an infant and was raised in Downey and Norwalk before coming to Oxnard at eight years old. He grew up in the community, attending Harrington, Elm Street, Haydock Junior High, E.O. Green, and Oxnard High School.
After high school, John attended California State University, Northridge, where he studied Radio, Television, and Film with an emphasis in film production. While working nights in security, he developed the discipline and work ethic that would later carry him through law school and into public service.
John’s interest in the law grew from firsthand experience with the justice system. After challenging a traffic stop in court and successfully making his case, he saw how powerful the law could be when people understand their rights and are willing to stand up for themselves. That experience helped inspire him to attend Southwestern Law School full time, where he joined Moot Court and served on its executive board during his third year.
In 2005, John joined the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, choosing to serve the county and community he called home. He began by handling general felony and domestic violence cases before moving into more specialized assignments, including gang-related cases and homicide prosecutions.
For more than a decade, John has worked in homicides, earning a reputation for taking on serious and difficult cases. His guiding principle has remained simple: victims come first.
John’s work has included cases involving domestic violence, gang crimes, hate crimes, cold cases, child homicide, and murder. He has been recognized for his service, including being named Prosecutor of the Year twice, receiving the 2014 Sherwood Prize for combating hate crimes, speaking at the National Homicide Investigators Association conference, and receiving recognition from the Oxnard Police Department Violent Crimes Unit.

Now, John is running for Oxnard City Council to bring that same commitment to accountability, service, and results to City Hall.
John believes Oxnard deserves leadership that listens to residents, respects taxpayers, and restores trust in local government. He is concerned that too many residents feel unheard, that city processes have become too difficult to navigate, and that taxpayer dollars are not always handled with the level of care the public deserves.
As a candidate, John is focused on transparency, responsible spending, public safety, and cutting through red tape so residents and small businesses can get things done. He believes city decisions should be made openly, residents should be treated with respect, and community members should feel safe speaking up.
John lives in Oxnard with his wife, a family physician who earned her medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and became a United States citizen through hard work and dedication. They have been married for 13 years. John is also a proud father to his daughter, who works at an animal hospital in San Diego.
John and his family are Catholic and have attended churches throughout the area, including the Mission and Our Lady of the Assumption. He has also served his community as treasurer of his HOA.
For John Barrick, this campaign is about giving back to the city that helped raise him. It is about restoring trust, listening to residents, protecting taxpayer dollars, and working for a better Oxnard.
